Sourcing News and Tips
The news is not good for LinkedIn Sourcing, folks. :( Unfortunately, LinkedIn Keyword Boolean Search Remains Compromised. Here is what you need to know:
  1. LinkedIn people search (for accounts other than Recruiter or Sales Navigator) unhelpfully interprets any keywords that it thinks sound like job titles. As a result, the search is not Boolean. You might see dramatically different numbers of profiles depending on the order of keywords.
  2. Different users see different types of interpretations applied (even for the same search). The differences appear to be the result of some A/B testing by LinkedIn, and do not depend on the type of account a user has.
  3. The software behind these changes appears to be changing frequently (perhaps daily), making the search results for the same keywords return dramatically different results from day to day!
Consider the search senior software engineer. LinkedIn will now include results that contain synonyms, variations, and translations for each keyword! So, results may contain “sr” or “snr” instead of “senior”, “sw” instead of “software”, and “engineering” or even “Ingeniero” instead of “engineer”.
Unlike some other changes, this odd behavior is not LinkedIn’s push for us to pay more. What we are seeing is an (unfortunately, poor) attempt to guess what users mean when we enter our searches.
This behavior is similar to Google’s semantic search features, with two key differences. First, Google does a significantly better job interpreting user intent and providing matching results. Second, and most importantly, Google provides an opt-out in the form of “verbatim” searching.
